About the stones
Obsidian is volcanic glass, lava cooled too fast for atoms to arrange into a lattice. There's no crystal structure in it at all, which is why it takes such a deep wet polish and why it breaks in smooth curved shells. Rainbow obsidian is the same material carrying nanoscale mineral inclusions that scatter light into colored bands when the stone is cut and polished at the right angle. Whether you see the rainbow depends entirely on how you tilt it and how strong the light is. Under normal room light it reads as plain black.
Amethyst is quartz colored by trace iron plus natural irradiation. Chevron amethyst is amethyst that formed in alternating V-shaped bands with milky white quartz, the pattern left by stacked growth zones. Each bead cuts those bands at a different angle, so one shows a clean arrow and the next shows a soft purple smudge with a single stripe. You'll also see it sold as dream amethyst, which is a trade name for the same material.
