About the stone
Tiger's eye is a pseudomorph, which is the mineral world's word for one substance taking over another's body and keeping the shape (that's not creepy at all). Quartz replaced crocidolite fiber by fiber, molecule for molecule, and inherited the fibrous structure of the thing it replaced. Light hits those parallel twisted fibers and reflects back as a single rolling band. That's chatoyancy, the same effect that makes a cat's eye.
