Provenance and tradition
The sad whiteface clown is a historical character known as Pierrot. He began life as Pedrolino in Italian commedia dell'arte, arrived in France in the seventeenth century, and was reinvented in 1820s Paris by the mime Jean-Gaspard Deburau at the Théâtre des Funambules, stripping the character down to white face, dark brows, and silent longing. Pierrot is the one who loves and is not chosen. Nineteenth-century Symbolist painters and poets took him up as a stand-in for the artist himself, and the Victorians put his face on everything from postcards to porcelain.
The modern unsettling clown shares a history in carnival midway and sideshow performance. In the 20th century, a painted smile started reading as concealment rather than invitation. This piece stands in the uncanny valley where those two lineages meet: the melancholy of the pantomime and the unease of the midway, in one face.
