Sanctuary Smoke is a frankincense-forward loose incense, hand-blended at Keys to Manifestation in Lansing and made to burn on charcoal. Our founder Solinox noticed that frankincense, lemongrass, and a touch of lemon oil hit the coal together and leave a room smelling like somebody just finished cleaning it. They built the blend around that effect, then gave it a base of resin and sacred herbs so it purifies as well as it freshens.

What you get

  • 5 g loose incense, handmade in-house
  • Ingredients: frankincense, lemongrass, sandalwood, myrrh, garden sage (Salvia officinalis), bay laurel, lemon oil
  • Burns on lit charcoal; it will not self-ignite
  • Labeled jar with burning and safety instructions on the lid

About the blend

Frankincense is the hardened sap of Boswellia trees, gathered by scoring the bark and letting it weep. Myrrh is its darker, bitterer cousin from the Commiphora tree. On a coal they melt and give off heavy, fragrant smoke, so a small pinch goes a long way. Sandalwood sits underneath and holds the scent in the room after the smoke clears. Lemongrass and lemon oil make up the bright top. Garden sage and bay laurel are dried leaf; they crackle on the charcoal and add a sharp green edge.

Because this is a hand-mixed blend of whole ingredients, resin and herb won’t be perfectly even in every pinch. Give the jar a gentle shake before you scoop. Lemon oil is volatile, so keep the lid tight so that clean smell stays bright and fresh.

Correspondences

  • Frankincense: Sun; Fire and Spirit. Purification, protection, consecration. Burned at sunrise to Ra in ancient Egypt and still part of Catholic church incense today.
  • Myrrh: Moon and Saturn; Water. Purifies a space and consecrates amulets, talismans, and tools. Traditionally said to strengthen any incense it’s added to.
  • Sandalwood: Moon; Water and Air. Clears negativity, and pairs with frankincense in classic full-moon and spirit-work blends.
  • Bay laurel: Sun; Fire. One of the great protection and purification herbs. Apollo’s plant, burned by his priestesses for prophecy.
  • Garden sage: Jupiter; Air. Wisdom and protection, with an old folk reputation for guarding against the evil eye.

The solar resins and leaves are balanced by a lunar base, so the blend clears a space without leaving it harsh.

How to use it

Light a charcoal tablet in a heatproof dish lined with sand and wait until it ashes over gray. Sprinkle a pinch on top and add more as the smoke fades. Crack a window so the stale air has somewhere to go.

Smoke works on the air you’re standing in. It freshens and resets the room, but whatever is causing a sour smell (the litter box, the trash, the damp corner) still needs its own attention. Never leave burning charcoal unattended. Keep it away from kids and pets, especially birds.

Who this is for

  • House cleansing and new-home blessings
  • Consecrating tools, jewelry, and altar space before ritual
  • Practitioners who want a purification smoke without white sage
  • Anyone who loves classic church frankincense but wants a brighter, cleaner finish
