Hale Witch is a resin-forward loose incense, ground and blended by hand at Keys to Manifestation in Lansing, Michigan. Myrrh and benzoin make up more than half the blend by weight, so it smolders slowly and sweetly on the coal instead of flashing off as leaf smoke. It’s made for healing work in all its forms: the long recovery, the grieving season, the slow return of strength after a hard year.
What you get
- 5 g of loose incense
- Ingredients: myrrh, benzoin, rosemary, elderberry, rose, calendula
- Burns on charcoal tablets in a heatproof dish (sold separately)
About the blend
Myrrh is the dried gum of Commiphora myrrha, a thorny tree of the Horn of Africa and southern Arabia. Its smoke is bitter and balsamic, and it gives the blend its depth and staying power. Benzoin is resin tapped from Styrax trees in Southeast Asia, with a warm vanilla-like scent that softens the myrrh. Rosemary adds a bright, camphorous lift, and elderberry, rose and calendula round out the floral heart. Botanicals shift with each harvest, so color and scent will vary slightly from batch to batch.
Provenance & tradition
Hale is the Old Norse heill: whole, sound, healthy. Ves heill!, “be hale,” was both a greeting and a toast. The English words hale, whole and holy all grow from the same root, and that root is the idea behind this blend. The logo includes Berkano, the birch rune of the Elder Futhark. Birch is a pioneer tree, one of the first to return to burned or cleared ground, and the rune holds growth, regeneration, shelter and nurturing care. Hale Witch is a modern formula drawing on Western magickal herbalism and Northern rune lore, not a reconstruction of a historical Norse recipe. For those who honor Eir, the healer among the Norse goddesses, it makes a fitting offering smoke.
Who this is for
Hale Witch suits witches and pagans doing healing spells and recovery rituals. Burn it to bless a sickroom, to tend yourself through grief or burnout, or to clear space between energy-work sessions. It pairs well with healing candle magick, with Berkano rune work, and with devotional work for Eir. It’s also a thoughtful gift for someone on a long road back.
How to burn
Light a charcoal tablet in a heatproof dish and wait until the edges turn grey. Sprinkle a small pinch on top, and add more as it fades. Never leave burning incense unattended. Burn in a ventilated room away from kids and pets.
Sold for ritual and spiritual use. Not a substitute for medical care.
