Why the pair works
The deck is small-press and printed independently by the artist, which means the card stock is good but the packaging is a plain tuck box. That box will soften and split within a year of daily handling. The bag is the fix, and it's the reason to buy them together rather than intending to sort out storage later.
The pouch is unlined woven cotton-family fabric, which breathes. Cards stored in synthetic-lined or velvet pouches in a humid Michigan summer will hold moisture against the stock and cup at the edges over a season or two. Plain woven cotton doesn't do that. There's no thread on the interior face either, since the design is printed rather than embroidered, so nothing abrades the card edges.
Provenance
Belanger is a Vancouver illustrator and cat foster coordinator. Most of the cats in the deck are real rescue animals, drawn from photographs, with their stories recorded in the guidebook. Five percent of proceeds from the deck go to V.O.K.R.A., the Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association — a no-kill, all-volunteer organization.
The deck's structure is Rider-Waite-Smith. Minor Arcana are fully illustrated scenes rather than pip cards, so RWS-trained readers will find their existing visual cues intact. The tone throughout is gentle; Belanger describes her own practice as closer to journaling than to prediction, and even the traditionally hard cards are drawn with a light hand.
