About the stone

Amethyst is a variety of quartz. Manganese in clear quartz produces the purple; varying iron content shifts the depth of it, which is why the color range runs from near-black plum to the palest lavender. The deepest material comes out of Uruguay, Siberia, Africa, and Colorado, while the medium purple most people picture comes mostly from Brazil.

The point here is raw rather than tumbled or faceted, so the natural crystal faces and internal veiling are intact. Amethyst is Mohs 7, hard enough to shrug off ordinary handling. Sunlight is its one real enemy: prolonged direct sun fades purple quartz permanently. A shelf out of the window's path keeps the color.

Correspondences

Chakras: throat, third eye, and crown. Astrological signs: Pisces, Virgo, Aquarius, and Capricorn.

Amethyst is traditionally called a stone of spirituality and contentment and a stone of meditation. It is worked for transmuting lower-frequency energy into higher, and it stands for complete metamorphosis, i.e. changing the entire form of something. That transmuting quality is also how its protection is described: energy directed at you is turned before it goes back out.

It is one of the finest third-eye stones for stimulating vision, both inward and outward. Traditional uses include self-evaluation, seeing many possibilities at once and the unity underneath them, and connection to other planes, including astral work, the higher self, the spirit world, and the ancestors. It clears the aura, brings stability and strength, and carries what the old texts call primal peace, the peace present before birth. It is also traditionally worked to support sobriety, to soothe temperament, to encourage flexibility, and to magnify love close at hand.

About the form

The head is a porcelain china head. Keep dry and clean with a soft cloth.
