About the stones
Obsidian is volcanic glass. Lava cooled faster than its atoms could organize into a lattice, so there's no crystal structure inside it, just liquid rock stopped in place. That's why the polish goes so deep and looks so wet.
Aventurine is quartz carrying reflective mineral inclusions, which is where the faint internal glitter comes from.
Tiger's eye is a pseudomorph. Quartz replaced crocidolite fiber by fiber and kept the fiber alignment, which is why light rolls across it in a single band rather than scattering.
