Introduction to Seiðr

Sources, Stigma, and the Modern Revival

America/Detroit
Add to calendar:

Many traditions have a magical aspect. Heathenry has two, and one of them is Seiðr. In this beginner-friendly Introduction to Seiðr, Snow and Jeremy will discussion the historical texts and descriptions of Seiðr and how Heathens have embraced it (or not!) as part of their modern. We'll also look at what sources are available about ancient practice before discussing what some of the building blocks are for the practice for those interested in learning more.

We'll learn about:

  • What the historical record gives us: verified texts and descriptions, plus what we can (and can't) responsibly infer them them
  • How Seiðr shows up in Heathen lore and worldview: what it's used for, how it's framed, and why it's not "Norse Wicca"
  • Modern Heathen approaches: how different Heathens embrace Seiðr (or don't), and the reasons behind those choices
  • Controversy & context: the social/gendered stigma in the sources, modern misconceptions, and how to keep your practice in line with your ethics
  • Building blocks for further study: foundational skills and concepts to explore next, plus a map of available sources and learning pathways

Bring: a notebook and curiosity

Beginner-friendly: you don't need prior Heathen experience, just a willingness to engage thoughtfully with the material.
